Baccarat – Low House Edge and Easy to Play

Baccarat is a casino game that has a low house edge, and is easy to play. Typically when you have a low house edge in a casino game, it comes with a trade off. Whether that is a lengthy strategy to learn as in blackjack or video poker, or knowledge to sift through good and bad bets as in craps. But not in baccarat. Baccarat is one of the few casino games that combine a low house edge with no need to learn a complex strategy, and can be enjoyed by players from any age or experience level.

Baccarat is played with a nine-card deck, and the goal is to bet on which hand will have the closest value to 9. Players can bet on either the player hand, the banker hand or a tie. Two cards are dealt to each hand and the values are determined by adding the individual card values together and then ignoring the tens digit (so a 9 and 6 becomes 9, because only the final number counts). If either the player or the banker has a total closer to nine, that hand wins. If a tie occurs, all bets on the player or banker are paid out. Tie bets pay out 8-to-1 and are generally offered at live baccarat tables. Score sheets are also available at baccarat tables to help keep track of your winnings.

There are several different variations of baccarat, with the rules a little bit different depending on whether you’re playing “punto banco” or “chemin de fer.” The basic principle, though, is that you place a bet on which hand (player or banker) will have the highest total after all the cards are dealt. Nine is the best possible value and will win you the most money.

Some casinos use more than six cards, which affects the house edge and odds of winning. You should always check the rules of the particular game you’re playing to make sure the number of decks is correct.

There are also a few strategies that can be used to improve your chances of winning at baccarat. The first is to simply stick with a banker bet, since it has a lower house edge than the player side. The second is to employ a card counting technique, which can reduce the house edge by around 0.5%. Lastly, you can try to predict the outcome of the game by looking at the trends of previous hands. This is known as ‘edge sorting’ and can be very useful when choosing your bets. However, these strategies can’t be guaranteed to win you the most money. Regardless of what your strategy is, it’s important to be patient and play responsibly.
